Dr Chua admits MCA council revamp a PR disaster

PETALING JAYA, Nov 20 – MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek (picture) acknowledged today that the presidential council revamp on Wednesday which saw nearly half the members aligned to Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai axed by the president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat was a “public relations disaster.”

“It gave rise to the perception that the president is being personal,” said Dr Chua.

However, he blasted Youth and Wanita chiefs Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun for saying that there was no democracy in MCA.

“They were party to the decision to sack me even though I was duly elected as deputy president. And even after I was sacked, I did not cry and say there was no democracy but I just went and reversed the decision via an EGM,” said Dr Chua referring to the emotional outburst by Wee and Chew in a dramatic press conference immediately after the announcement of their removal from the presidential council on Wednesday.

He said that the president has powers to appoint whoever he wishes to the council but it was hoped that the power would be used “wisely.”

By convention, he said, the Youth and Wanita chiefs were appointed as were all ministers and deputy ministers but, at the same time, it was not right to say there was no longer any representation by the wings.

“They will be invited and other leaders from the wings have been appointed,” he noted.
