KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 — When Hafidz Baharom, a freelance writer, entered a public university in 2002, he was sent with his classmates to a government camp for a week.
It was the usual jungle trekking and other team-building activities, but interspersed with these were lectures. Some of the content was disturbing, he said.
“We were taught a song with lyrics like ‘the land that you walk upon is owned by others. Lecturers told us the Malays were forced to depend on the Chinese for support after 1998 because some Malays had betrayed their own race,” he recalled.
The segment on Malay betrayal was in reference to the 1998 sacking of deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim which caused many Malays to vote for the opposition in the general election a year later. “It was brainwashing propaganda,” Hafidz, 26, told The Straits Times.
These courses have been running for years, and are intended to instil nationalistic values and patriotism. Conducted by the National Civics Bureau — better known as BTN (Biro Tatanegara) — the courses are for university students on public scholarships and civil servants. BTN is under the Prime Minister’s Department.
Last week, seven young Pakatan Rakyat Selangor assemblymen handed over a letter to the Selangor government, urging it to stop allowing students of state- owned universities and colleges to attend these courses.
The Selangor government, which is now controlled by the opposition Pakatan Rakyat, owns three universities and colleges.
“We wrote to the Menteri Besar and executive councillor for education,” said Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, a state assemblyman for Seri Setia, and also special officer to the mentri besar.
Nik Nazmi said one of the colleges had already stopped sending students to the camps. He told The Straits Times that he too had first-hand experience with a BTN programme when he attended a five-day camp before being sent to university in London in 2003. The lectures, he said, focused on emphasising that the Malays were left behind and still needed affirmative action.
“It was racial and political in nature,” Nik Nazmi said, recalling that Anwar was vilified for being too close to Western powers, and that the opposition Parti Islam SeMalaysia was labelled as deviationist.
Batu Caves assemblyman Amirudin Shari, who also signed the letter, was quoted by news website Malaysiakini as saying that feedback showed that much of the BTN programme had nothing to do with nation-building.
“Participants are indoctrinated with propaganda about ‘Ketuanan Melayu’ (Malay supremacy) and external threats,” he said.
It was reported that the government is now considering revamping the BTN as part of the initiative to promote Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia policy, which aims to resolve the racial polarisation that has become one of the country’s greatest worries.
Since Najib took office in April, he has been reaching out to the minorities, and has attempted to resolve their biggest grievances.
This included tackling problems relating to the conversion of children to Islam, and the removal of the Malay quota for ownership of public-listed companies. — The Straits Times

UMNO leaders keep telling the Malays how they are incapable of competing with others and hence will always require help from UMNO. No good caring parents would do such a cruel thing to their kids.
It is strange how UMNO members can continue to respect leaders who have such a low opinion of their own followers.
UMNO leaders, of course, continues to divide the races by instilling distrust and hatred among the races. This numbs the common sense of UMNO members.
TDM is a most accomplished manipulator of the Malays. My greatest disappointment has been TDm's misuse of his power and the opportunity given to him to create a united and prosperous Malaysia. Instead, TDM has chosen to maintain his stay in power by dividing Malaysians.
Most cruel of all is TDM's effect on the Malay psyche and self-confidence!
TDM has totally brainwashed UMNO Malays into believing they are as backward and incompetent as their UMNO leaders maintain!

Firstly why do you hate your fellow Malaysians? Secondly, I utterly could not understand why you can spew such comments without disgrace, does your religion and your upbringing taught you that? Then I am pity for your parents and you yourself that you have this kind of immoral mentality. Here are my comments to your remarks and I do hope that you will develop the wisdom to become a better person...
1) Apa salahnya dengan Ketuanan Melayu? We are the bumiputra and this land belong to us. Who ever challenge our rights must be eradicated.
Most of us or I should say almost all of us are born here in Malaysia, regardless of whatever race we are. We have a Malaysian birth certificate and a Malaysian identity card. So are we not considered as bumiputra who are born on this land? Kindly check your family lineage from where your ancestors came from before giving this kind of comment. We are not challenging any person's right, we are just seeking for equal justice and treatment for ALL MALAYSIANS...
2) UMNO is the backbone of this country and there is nothing wrong to educate Malay to love UMNO and the country.
Kindly do and repeat your history study on this for it seems that you failed to understand the lesson of history. I might be wrong but UMNO is not the backbone of this country, it was an alliance of all the political parties which put aside all our differences and hence our beloved Tunku Abdul Rahman brought birth to a country which we can proudly call Malaysia. Did he even mentioned it belongs to UMNO? There is nothing wrong to educate Malays to love their country, but do keep in mind that we, the other races are Malaysians too...
3) Singapore Malay is being marginalised by their country and even Malaysia Malays now are being marginalised.
If you do feel that Singapore Malays are being marginalised, please with all my heart, do go there and fight for their rights. To be honest, why are you so worried about Singapore when it is Malaysia we are talking about? Malaysian Malays being marginalised? Are you sure? How about the rest of us? Are we being marginalised?
4) Malaysia peninsular and Singapore are used to be our lands but see what happen after the Chinese came? They took away our land, our home, our wealth and our future. Is this fair?
Your land? By what do you mean your land? My ancestors work with sweat, blood and tears for this land for the better of the next generation. So what did happen when the Chinese came? Which land, home, wealth and your future did they take from you?
5) Even today the president of China has to pay respect to our Prime Minister. What are Chinese in this country? They are simply nothing!
Now that's the joke of the century, President of China paying respect to our PM. Chinese are taught to be respectful to all people regardless of race, what did your parents teach you? You must be living in a vivid world whereby you think that Malaysia is the center of the Universe. What did Chinese do in this country?... Simple, without Chinese or all the indigenous races, then there are not such country called Malaysia.
Last but not least, we all are Malaysians, you might be a proud Malay, but you are nowhere near as to be a Malaysian...

Doesn't this mean that it is the Malays who should be grateful to the Chinese for having their support, since they (the Malays) got betrayed by their own people? Geez man, the way they twist things are sick. No wonder BTN is sick.
