Malays to remain government’s priority, says DPM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — The government will give priority to Malays in whatever programme it carries out, assures Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said he was giving the assurance following a misunderstanding after the government’s announcement on the liberalisation of 27 service sub-sectors to woo foreign investment to the country.

He said the government would continue efforts to increase Malays’ participation in the country’s economic activities.

“Their involvement is only 18 or 19 per cent so far. Hence, in whatever the government does, Malays will be given priority.

“We realise measures taken so far are not effective enough to boost Malay participation in the country’s economic pie. I feel efforts will have to be continued to increase their involvement,” he said when opening the annual general meeting of the Malaysian Malay Entrepreneurs and Merchants’ Association (PERDASAMA).

“In ensuring equitable and fair distribution of the country’s economic pie, the government will continue to take measures to ensure the nation’s economic cake does not only expand but also open up new opportunities to both Malays and non-Malays,” he added. – Bernama
