RM160 for a day pass to Singapore’s Universal Studios

SINGAPORE, Nov 19 — It will cost adults S$66 (RM160.50) to experience the rides and other attractions at Resorts World Sentosa’s (RWS) Universal Studios theme park on weekdays.

Announcing the much-anticipated pricing yesterday, RWS also said weekday passes for children will cost S$48.

The weekday pricing makes tickets to the theme park cheaper than that of Universal’s other attractions at Orlando in the United States and Osaka in Japan, which go for S$109 and S$90 respectively.

Also announced yesterday: Prices for two-day passes, as well as the charge for express passes which will allow holders to jump the queues.

Singaporeans who were hoping that they would be given special rates were, however, left guessing.

Since speculation on ticket prices began ahead of the theme park’s opening early next year, there have been calls from some quarters for Singaporeans to be given cheaper rates than tourists.

But when asked about this yesterday, an RWS spokesman would only say that “there will be tie-ups with our local strategic partners to offer Singaporeans attractive packages and rates, especially for off-peak periods”.

She added that details will be announced at a later date, along with the pricing for annual passes.

Holders of the day passes will be given unlimited access to the theme park and other attractions — including several themed restaurants and retail outlets — for a full day.

RWS expects up to 30,000 visitors to throng the park daily when it opens.

The announcement of the rates garnered mixed reactions from Singaporeans.

Some, like freelance writer Billy Teo, 38, felt they were reasonable.

Said the father of two: “Compared to paying about S$30 for half an hour on the Singapore Flyer, this is value for money.”

But others, like general practitioner Franco Wong, felt the cost was too exorbitant. Wong, who has three children, noted that just getting entry to the theme park for a family like his would land him a bill of about S$300.

Yesterday, RWS also announced room rates for three of its six hotels. The rates — deluxe rooms at the Festive Hotel start at S$400, and go up to S$450 for the Hard Rock Hotel and S$500 for Hotel Michael — are markedly higher than those at similar hotels on the island, such as Rasa Sentosa which charges from S$230. — The Straits Times
